Insulation Case Study: Quiet, Comfortable, Sustainable

Not all insulation is created equal. Watch this exclusive video to see why Greenfiber’s cellulose insulation was selected for the VISION House Las Vegas project.

Insulation choices matter. After a long day out, you want to come back to a home that feels just right. It shouldn’t be too hot or too cold. And you definitely don’t want to hear the neighbor’s barking dog from three houses down. The right insulation turns your home into a sanctuary: quiet and comfortable.

Ron Jones, President of Green Builder Media, spoke with Laura Woodford, VP of Marketing at Greenfiber, outside the VISION House Las Vegas model home to discuss the advantages of Greenfiber’s cellulose insulation compared to conventional fiberglass.

Woodford explained, “SANCTUARY outperforms other insulation products because it completely fills the wall cavity. If there’s electrical wiring or plumbing running through the wall, SANCTUARY surrounds it and fills in all the gaps. It’s also very dense, which gives it a high resistance to air infiltration. That’s not only great for thermal performance but also for blocking sound.

With traditional fiberglass batts, it’s difficult to achieve a complete fill, especially around obstructions like wiring or pipes, making it harder to achieve a Grade 1 install the first time.”

Jones added that SANCTUARY also minimizes installation waste. “Anything that is not used in the wall cavity is vacuumed up, put back into the machine, and reused.”

In addition to its performance benefits, SANCTUARY has the lowest embodied carbon of any widely available insulation on the market. It’s made from 85% recycled paper, making it a biogenic material.  Couple this with low-energy manufacturing and short-haul transportation and it’s clear why cellulose insulation is the responsible choice for builders and the planet.

“The cool thing about SANCTUARY is that it continues to sequester carbon for the life of the home—up to 75 years,” Woodford noted. “We’re really helping to offset other building materials that might be more carbon intensive.”

The biogenic nature of SANCTUARY makes it the superior insulation choice. As Jones noted, quoting The Overstory, “What you make from a tree must be at least as miraculous as what you cut down.” He added, “This product gives new life to recycled material, sequesters carbon, and becomes a durable good that will remain in place for the life of the home. That’s quite an achievement.”
