Simplified Smart Home Technology for Sustainability
5:08
Managing energy and water use along with a safe and secure home is easier in a connected smart house.
An important part of the mission of the VISION House Las Vegas project—a partnership by Beazer Homes and Green Builder Media—is to demonstrate the viability and attainability of sustainable, connected homes in communities around the United States.
Smart home systems manage energy use, detect water leaks, provide safety and comfort to homeowners, all features once reserved for luxury custom homes, but now they’re more broadly available.
Resideo, a leading global manufacturer and developer of technology-driven smart home products, with solutions in more than 150 million homes, will showcase multiple products from its First Alert and Honeywell Home brands at the VISION House Las Vegas, which includes two model homes at the master planned community of Cadence in Henderson just outside of Las Vegas.
In addition, a deconstructed model will be onsite for builders, contractors and buyers to see what’s behind the walls in Beazer’s READY homes. These homes and all future Beazer homes will meet the Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Ready Home requirements.
“The widespread adoption of the sustainable and connected home can save crucial resources like energy and water and curb high energy costs without sacrificing comfort,” says JD Wix, Sales Leader Residential New Construction & Property-Tech at Resideo. “Resideo’s commitment to high sustainability and comfort standards ensures that our products serve the people that use them and the planet we share.”
Managing Comfort, Conserving Resources
The Honeywell Home product portfolio includes 17 ENERGY STAR® certified thermostats. In 2022, these energy-efficient thermostats helped consumers save 2.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, the energy equivalent of 275,000 homes in one year.
According to a study performed in Ohio, Honeywell Home T5 and T6 Pro users saved between $83 and $154 in one year on heating and cooling bills (between 8% and 16%) through high use of the devices’ scheduling features.
At the VISION House Las Vegas, the Honeywell Home T10+ Pro Smart Thermostat will demonstrate a simplified way for homeowners to manage temperature, humidity, and ventilation from anywhere.
The system includes sensors to balance temperatures for comfort throughout the home, smart lockouts that can be activated during extreme temperature or humidity events, and dry contact alerts for water leaks and full drain pans with the option for an automatic system shut off.
Water Alerts for Peace of Mind and Protection
Resideo’s First Alert water solutions are designed to detect and even prevent water leaks and can help the homeowner avoid costly water damage and insurance claims. In fact, the company estimates that its leak detection products saved consumers 2.4 million gallons of water in 2022, and helped avoid what would have been more than $2.7 million in insurance claims.
At the VISION House Las Vegas, the First Alert L5 WiFi Water Leak Shutoff Valve can automatically turn off the water to the entire home if a leak is detected, which safeguards belongings, a home’s structure and potentially expensive repairs. Insurance claims from water damage are one of the most common and costly, as the average claim is $11,650, according to Policygenius.
Connected Alarms for Safety
Resideo strives to help protect what matters most through its trusted Honeywell Home and First Alert products. New standards for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors went into effect on June 30, 2024, for all manufacturers of smoke, and combination smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, and these new standards will be required by many building codes and state laws.
The new alarm standards better reflect modern home design and materials as higher ceilings, open floor plans and synthetic construction materials contribute to faster-spreading fires.
At the VISION House Las Vegas, BRK’s Smart Interconnect system, which connects with most of Resideo's First Alert and BRK Precision Detection alarms, will demonstrate the value of smart home technology. When one alarm sounds after detecting smoke or carbon monoxide, all compatible alarms (up to 12 smoke alarms and six other carbon monoxide or heat alarms) will also sound. The alarms also have a one-touch easy access button to test or temporarily silence an alarm.
“A safe, comfortable, and sustainable home for your loved ones is one aspect of what matters most,” Wix says. “With builder partners such as Beazer, we hope to bring more individuals and families smart home products and solutions, ensuring accessibility to sustainability, safety, security and comfort.”
