Consumers in Control with Energy Management System

Smart electrical panel and app contribute to energy independence and savings for builders and buyers.
While the systems, appliances and construction of the VISION House Las Vegas: Crossing the Rubicon project complement each other to create a Zero Energy Ready Home, ultimately it will be the end users who determine whether the home achieves maximum energy efficiency.
SPAN’s energy management system will be part of the model homes at the VISION House Las Vegas for onsite demonstration of how consumers can control and monitor their energy use with ease.
“At SPAN, we are on a mission to enable electrification of all homes,” says Arch RAO, founder and CEO of SPAN. “This requires us to think about the infrastructure in our homes and the electric grid. So, we have reinvented the home electrical panel to make it more accessible for every home to become fully electric by using the technology built into the SPAN Panel measuring and controlling every load in the home.”
VISION House Las Vegas, a partnership by Beazer Homes and Green Builder Media, includes two model homes at the master planned community of Cadence in Henderson just outside of Las Vegas. In addition, a deconstructed model will be onsite for builders, contractors and buyers to see what’s behind the walls in Beazer’s READY homes. These homes and all future Beazer homes will meet the Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Ready Home™ requirements.
Meeting the Challenge of Rising Demand for Electricity
The drive to design all-electric homes powered by renewable energy requires innovation by builders and suppliers. SPAN has partnered with builders throughout the U.S. to help them with the transition by providing homeowners with high-quality energy management features, exceeding energy and building code requirements, and creating electrical grid benefits through more efficient systems.
“We are seeing a natural progression of homeowners adopting electric technologies, such as EV cars and chargers, heat pumps, induction cooktops and electric water heaters as they become more affordable and functionally comparable or better than their gas counterparts,” Rao says. “The missing link is that when you adopt these technologies you are adding a significant amount of demand for electricity to your home that cannot be easily met by adding more power capacity, as it is an expensive and time-consuming process.”
Codes for new homes and communities dictate that builders must bring in nearly twice the amount of power capacity into every home, he says.
“SPAN allows you the opportunity to fully electrify without having to spend money on those expensive and time-consuming power line upgrades because SPAN becomes the control center, or power control system, for all the devices in the home as it sits between the home and the grid,” Rao says.
Home Energy Visibility
For homeowners, an essential component of maintaining an energy efficient home is knowing which systems and appliances use the most energy and when. At VISION House Las Vegas, SPAN’s products that will help homeowners manage their homes include:
The SPAN Panel, a smart electrical panel and UL listed Energy Management System that enables homes with maximum electrical efficiency, total visibility and energy savings. SPAN homeowners can control and monitor every circuit in the home in real time, seamlessly install add-ons like EV charging, heat pumps, solar and battery storage, and save on their monthly energy bills by using data and insights from the SPAN app to make smarter energy usage decisions.
The SPAN App allows homeowners to understand how their home is using energy directly from their phone or tablet. This enables them to make decisions that maximize their energy efficiency to live more sustainably, all while saving money on their monthly energy bills.
Resilience Through Power Outages
SPAN’s systems enable homeowners to power what matters with their home battery during an outage. The result: homeowners have 40% more battery duration and 100% control by being able to change their backup load priorities in real-time using the SPAN App. This allows them flexibility to power the appliances they need and keep the power on longer during an outage.
EV Charging
In addition to demonstrating how homeowners can control their energy consumption, SPAN Drive, a Level 2 EV Charger, will be installed at the VISION House Las Vegas. SPAN Drive delivers up to 48 amps (11.52 kW) of power for fast and dynamic Level 2+ EV charging and is compatible with all EVs, including Tesla.
Futureproofing for Builders and Buyers
SPAN’s Energy Management System includes a software feature called SPAN PowerUp™ that senses current at the main breaker, then manages appliances to keep current below 80% of its utility feeder rating as required by National Electrical Code (NEC).
Builders can meet the additional electrical demands of all-electric homes without the costly household and grid investments required with non-SPAN products. This results in cost savings for both builders and homebuyers, while also supporting a more efficient and resilient grid, which is beneficial to all utility customers.
Homeowners can add electric appliance installations in the future while staying on the current available electrical service, which eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming service upgrades. SPAN homes can easily evolve alongside the evolving lifestyles of homeowners.
As builders make homes fully electric or ready for full electrification in the future, they face a burden of bringing in 300
or 400 amps of power rather than just 200 amps into the homes, Rao says.
“Builders are spending more money on materials, spending on larger panels, on the labor required to bring this additional power into the home, and also potentially spending more money on the interaction between the utility with the need for larger transformers,” Rao says. “These are significant costs that can be avoided out of the gate at the design stage by installing SPAN.”
