Data Reveals Builders Are Not Charged By Battery Storage Demand

Homeowners are willing to invest in battery storage for their homes, but builders aren’t seeing the demand.  

In a recent Green Builder Media COGNITION Smart Data survey, consumers were asked about their home resiliency. More than half (51.8%) of survey respondents believe that back up power systems should be included as standard in every home. Yet, builders say that a mere 13.5% of clients want to invest in battery storage.

More than 56% of homeowners also reported that battery storage would be their primary choice of investment of home improvements to convert to an all-electric home, receiving the highest score of all investment options.

This highlights consumer interest in being less dependent on the grid during climate events that impact power, and a growing desire to be more environmentally responsible. In 2024, survey responses showed little to no demand for battery storage, uncovering a pattern over the two-year timeline for growing demand for battery storage as there are more violent climate events and more power outages across the country.

While consumers report that the primary reason for purchasing battery storage would be environmental sustainability (43.4%), energy independence rates second at 23.7%, followed by energy cost savings at 21.7%.

Higher utility costs and incentives and rebates to install solar also support this growing market opportunity for storage.
