Sherwin-Williams senior designer account executive Laurie Clark and VISION House Scottsdale owner Susan Raterman discuss choosing paint colors for a health-focused home, covering the SuperPaint air-purifying and sanitizing lines and how large-format samples let the Ratermans test colors in the home's shifting north-south daylight.
00:00:03:15 - 00:00:23:29
Laurie Clark: I'm Laurie Clarke and the senior designer account executive with the Sherwin-Williams company in the state of Arizona. I work with interior designers to make sure they have our color tools and product information to assist them completing any of their jobs. And with us today is Susan, the owner of revision House in Scottsdale.
00:00:24:00 - 00:00:54:06
Susan Raterman: The revision House Scottsdale is the forever home and sanctuary for my husband, who is a building science consultant, and myself in environmental health and in indoor air quality consultant. So our combined design goals were low energy usage, resiliency and health and wellness. And Sherwin-Williams paint products fit right into that formula, not only from a design and comfort perspective, but a health and wellness perspective as well.
00:00:54:07 - 00:01:27:09
Laurie Clark: So some of the products that when Susan and I had met, we talked about some of the different products that we were going to utilize in their home. And our super paint wellness line was really just key for this. We worked with the air purifying product and this was used throughout the house, and this product actually contributes to better indoor air quality by reducing VOC levels, those volatile organic compounds, from potential sources like carpet, cabinet fabrics and other building materials.
00:01:27:09 - 00:01:58:09
Laurie Clark: But it also helps rooms stay fresher longer with odor limiting technology. So that breaks down to like those unwanted household odors wherever they may be. In the bathrooms. We utilize the super Paint sanitizing product, and this paint really provides ongoing antibacterial action to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria on those painted surfaces. So it is an EPA registered product.
00:01:58:10 - 00:02:27:29
Susan Raterman: We used a traditional hands on design process first, narrowing down the potential colors with Sherwin-Williams fan decks and then ordering large format samples of colors so that we can see them in each room. And our friend Lori was very instrumental in getting us these large format pellets to explore very quickly. And with that, we could account for the fact that our house has a north south orientation.
00:02:27:29 - 00:02:46:15
Susan Raterman: When you're in the north end of the room, pretty much everything, whether it's paint or cabinets or flooring, goes gray. And when you're on the south side of the room, that doesn't occur. So it was very important to us to have the flexibility to carry around these paint samples and to feel them in every room.
00:02:46:16 - 00:03:13:12
Laurie Clark: I remember your home, and I remember it at the building stage, and how that how that color kind of switched around. Some of the colors that we used in the home is our sassy gold is in the powder room, antler velvet, which is an accent while in the guest room and also in Steve's office. And then the svelte sage, which I think you're in right now, the accent wall in your office.
00:03:13:12 - 00:03:38:21
Laurie Clark: And then, of course, our canvass hand was everywhere else. And yes, those large format samples really worked out great because I think you could walk around the house and see them in different light, see them at night, in the morning, and just how everything bounced around for other people. Sometimes using our visualizer online can be really helpful as well, just to kind of help visualize those colors and how they look in the space.
00:03:38:21 - 00:04:00:27
Laurie Clark: And you can utilize that from our website, Sherwin-Williams. Com some other things that we do offer as well is our virtual paint consultants that you can actually meet with online, on FaceTime, what have you to really help you pick some colors for your space. So that's really helpful as well. So there's just lots of opportunities to be able to select color.
00:04:00:27 - 00:04:20:06
Laurie Clark: And one of the things about the online is that if you choose to color, it will give you some suggested coordinating colors to go with it. Because sometimes we can't think of like, what can go with that? So if you don't have anybody that can help you, that's a really great way to be able to utilize our website to find those colors for your space.
00:04:20:08 - 00:04:47:04
Susan Raterman: So as Lori mentioned, we used canvas Tam throughout most of the home. And this is the absolute perfect backdrop for all of the the rich colors that we chose for our cabinetry and the blacks and the tops and the browns. And it's a, it's a what I would call a true beige doesn't go pink, doesn't go green, doesn't go yellow or gray.
00:04:47:06 - 00:05:19:10
Susan Raterman: So that was very helpful. They spelt sage which is behind me was an accent color I chose because my desire was to bring nature indoors. So despite the fact I'm in an office environment, there are some relaxing properties to be had by the the paint selection. The antler velvet is more of a rich, earthy tone, and that was used in some of our rooms to provide an accent in rooms that were very quiet colors in terms of the furniture.
00:05:19:13 - 00:05:36:12
Susan Raterman: And then in our powder room, that sassy gold was the perfect choice because it matches one of the colors in our natural stone, so we really couldn't be happier with the overall selection that Sherwin Williams offered and then those that we chose.
00:05:36:13 - 00:05:45:07
Laurie Clark: I couldn't agree with you more about the canvas tan as well. Susan. It is truly a great neutral, so I'm glad it's working out so well for you.
00:05:45:08 - 00:05:55:09
Susan Raterman: Well, we really appreciate Sherwin-Williams help with the house, being a sponsor, helping with the color selection, and most importantly, helping with our goals of health and wellness.
