Solar Canopies: Detached Power Production for Home Patios

Residential versions such as NRG's new Solar Haven Canopy bring what was once a commercial-only product down to scale.

Without a solar power source, outdoor kitchen and entertaining areas that consume power and resources are a bit hard to defend, from a resource standpoint. But the age of homeowner-sized solar canopies has finally arrived.

What's interesting about these canopies, from solar PV perspective, is that they're not just generating hobby-level wattage. One of NRG's models features 250 watt panels and can produce up to 6 kW. That's enough to power most efficient homes, with the exception of central air conditioning (chart showing average electrical demand of home gadgets here)

One reason that solar canopies are becoming reality is the rapidly dropping price of PV panels, of course, but also the availability of translucent PV. This greatly expands design options.
