Later this year, the nation’s first “integrated” wind and solar hybrid project will begin producing power outside a small city in northwest Minnesota.

Developed by Juhl Energy, Inc., the Red Lake Falls Project combines two 2.3 megawatt (MW) General Electric 116-meter rotor turbines with a 1 MW solar photovoltaic installation.

Dan Juhl, the company’s founder, said it will be the first project in the country to use wind integrated solar energy (WiSE) allowing turbines and panels to share a converter, which transforms electrical direct-current voltage for use on the grid.

Like many other people throughout the world, I have been dreaming of a future powered by renewable energy for many years. Fortunately, that dream is becoming a reality.

Like many other people throughout the world, I have been dreaming of a future powered by renewable energy for many years. Fortunately, that dream is becoming a reality. Today, solar and wind energy have become major contributors to global energy production. In the United States alone, solar, wind (mostly large-scale wind), biomass, and geothermal now produce about 7% of the nation’s electricity. When you add hydroelectricity to the mix, renewable energy now supplies over 13% of America’s electricity. That’s a recent change, occurring within the last few years.

Gauging Public Opinion on Small Wind Turbines

Posted by Michael Allen, Guest Columnist

There are more than 900,000 small wind turbines in use worldwide, but what does the public think about them?

Recent studies suggest that around 70 to 80 percent of people in Europe support wind farms, although there are still concerns around noise and aesthetics. Little is known, however, about public attitudes towards small wind turbines, which are generally defined as those with capacities below 100kW.

Cerian Tatchley, a researcher at the University of Stirling in Scotland, recently published the results of a survey that she believes is the first peer-reviewed research in the world investigating attitudes towards SWTs.
