Packing a healthy lunch for kids can use up a lot of your weekly grocery budget. But you can now buy in bulk and save $$$ over less healthy options.
I admit it, I'm an Amazon junkie. I buy clothes, shoes and garden supplies, but never food.spend way more money on kid lunch accessories than you think. I'm talking about those little juice containers, peanut butter crackers, granola bars and fruit sticks. And if you try to get the "healthy" ones that are GMO-free, packaged in BPA-free plastic, vegan, gluten-free, or any other kind of "special," you're going to pay up to TWICE as much as the other pricey snacks in the middle aisles.
The other day, I discovered online groceries. To be more specific, kid snacks.
Is shopping this way "green?" I did a little research and the answer is "It depends." A new study just came out that says unfortunately most people are using the time and driving saved with online shopping to use other resources, going out to restaurants, going to movies, and so on. They're just using their cars for other things. So if you want to feel good about shrinking your footprint while online shopping, use the time saved as an opportunity tot drive less, and spend more time with family. That's the green bottom line.
Take a look at your current kid snack spending, then do the math yourself. By my estimates, I'm saving 20- to 30 percent over what I'd spend in the supermarket for products that have even less "bonafides" than some of these products.
