Outdated Building Codes Plague Portland's Green Building Agenda

The Rose City looks to maintain its reputation as a leader in sustainability-focused building systems.

Portland, Oregon's green building leaders are concerned the city is losing its edge when it comes to new infrastructure, says James Cronin, a sUrban planners from aPortland_panorama3.jpground the nation have long looked to the Rose City for innovative ideas in stormwater management and other sustainability-focused systems. But outdated building codes and a lack of aggressiveness in mandates, according to local green building professionals, are holding Portland back."

This is happening in cities across the country as their infrastructure ages and building codes, particularly those mandating green building, don't keep up with the new technologies and practices that offer more energy-efficiency and water conservation. Some unique ideas put forth by mayoral candidates including streamlining permitting and construction requirements, even waiving fees, for companies working in stormwater management and other sustainable infrastructure areas.
