AWARDED THE 2015 ENERGY STAR Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing, the non-profit NeighborWorks Toledo Region project included 40 Homes, with HERS ratings in the 40-50 range.

The homes were built in and around existing properties, under the Cherry Legacy Homes brand, and included many energy-saving innovations, including:

  • Factory cast foundation wall panels lined with closed-cell foam insulation giving basement walls an R-12.5 rating;
  • Panelized wall sections utilizing a built-in energy efficient barrier that keeps out moisture and reduces air leakage;
  • Sealed loop hydronic heating system with combined with an air handler to provide instant response home heating;
  • On demand hot water heating system with constant hot water recirculation which reduces overall hot water usage.

These systems combined with a complete air sealing package (including blown in R-50 ceiling insulation), Green Seal/Green Seal Plus flooring, Energy Star appliances and Energy Star fixtures with CFL bulbs, contributed to receiving an Energy Star v3.0 Five Star Plus Certification for each of the 40 houses.
