Case Study: Johns Manville in VISION House Los Angeles

When you mention a green or high-performance house today, more likely than not consumers and builders will think: insulation. Because of the great amount of education surrounding the insulation category, consumers now understand the correlation between better quality— and correct installation of—insulation and lower utility bills and better comfort. 

Corbond_SPF_Wall_Instl_OverHd_Shot_TiffThe VISION House® Los Angeles team knew that insulation would have to be carefully spec’d in the show house to enable it to potentially function as a net zero energy house. Team members quickly decided that Johns Manville, with its 150-year history on the forefront of insulation products, was a perfect partner for this project. JM was the first manufacturer to have a complete line of certified Formaldehyde-free™ fiber glass building insulation. The company also is the only manufacturer to make both spray foam and fiber glass insulation products. 

To achieve net zero energy status1 for the VISION House Los Angeles, the team spec’d the following products from Johns Manville:

Spider_Install_edited-1JM Spider® custom insulation. This product is installed with little to no waste. JM Spider® Custom Insulation is made of greater than 98% fiber glass - an abundant and renewable resource. And at least 25% of the fiber glass is made of recycled glass content. It is made with certified JM Formaldehyde-free fiber glass, which improves indoor air quality by reducing overall exposure to formaldehyde. It also offers a high R-value per inch, which provides superior resistance to heat transfer, helping to reduce energy consumption and energy bills. The product comes in variable thickness levels, can fill 2x4 cavities up to an R-15 thermal rating, 2x6 cavities up to R-23, and 6” steel stud cavities up to R-25. The insulation also reduces sound transmission, achieving a Sound Transmission Class of 43 in a standard 2x4 wood-framed wall. The product resists mold because it sprays in almost dry (less moisture content than wood framing) and is treated with a U.S. EPA-registered mold inhibitor to protect the insulation against mold. JM Spider® insulation can be used for both wall and ceiling applications. In addition, only fiber glass insulation made without formaldehyde can pass Environmental Specification 1350, the toughest indoor air quality test in North America, with a non-detect for formaldehyde.

JM Corbond MCS™ SPF is air impermeable in accordance with ASTM E283 when installed at a thickness of 1.5 inches or more. It also acts as a thermal, air and moisture barrier helping to increase energy efficiency and prolong the life of buildings. This product provides superior thermal, air, and moisture isolation. It offers a maximum lift thickness of up to 2 inches per pass providing an R-value of 11 at 2 inches and R-39 at 6 inches. JM Corbond MCS™ SPF can be installed in temperatures as low as 45 F. The line of TPR2 Fireshell® intumescent coatings are recommended for application as an ignition barrier for JM Corbond MCS™ SPF, as required by International Building Codes.

Inclusion of Johns Manville products helped the show house achieve these certification and verification goals: LEED Certification, California Energy Star Certification and California Advanced Homes Program (CAHP), Cal-Green (Tier 2). The house will surpass the minimum Title 24 requirements by 30%.
