General Electric is researching and developing a magnetic system to keep food cold or frozen that may be ready for prime time in your kitchen within the decade.
The magnetic system will be 20 percent more efficient than current refrigeration systems. It is a little complicated to explain, but the system uses a water-based fluid that flows through a series of magnets to transfer heat. Current systems use a chemical refrigerant and a compressor.
German physicist Emil Warburg first observed what is called the magnetocaloric effect in 1881.
